Privacy Policy

Last updated July 2, 2026

This policy explains what DebateNow collects, why, who else touches it, and the control you keep. DebateNow is a public arena by design, so read section three closely.

1. Who controls your data

DebateNow ("we", "us") runs DebateNow and decides how your data is handled. Reach us about anything in this policy at noreply@yuzi.nl.

2. What we collect

  • Account details. Your handle, display name, an optional email address, and either a hashed password (web) or the stable identifier Sign in with Apple returns (iOS). We never see your Apple password.
  • Debate and rating data. The challenges you post or accept, the side you take, scheduled times, the peer ratings you give and receive (clarity, argument, civility) and any note you attach, plus your follows and interests.
  • Activity data. Your practice reps, daily streaks, and which debates you joined, so the streak engine and your stats work.
  • Device and push tokens. On iOS, an Apple Push token so we can notify you. Basic technical details that come with any web request, such as your browser type.
  • Payment metadata. When you subscribe to Pro, Stripe (web) or Apple (iOS) handle the card. We store only identifiers and subscription status, such as a Stripe customer and subscription id and whether your plan is active or trialing. We never store full card numbers.

We do not collect or store debate audio. The live voice runs through LiveKit and is not recorded. The web Solo Practice recording stays in your browser and never reaches us.

3. What is public by design

DebateNow is a public debating society, not a private journal. The following are visible to anyone, signed in or out: your handle, display name, interests, the challenges and completed debates tied to you, the ratings you received, your streaks, and your place in The Standings. They show up on public profiles, the board, The Record, share pages, and the leaderboard. Treat anything you type into a topic, a rating note, or a profile field as published. Your email address and password are never public.

4. How we use it

  • Run the core loop: match debaters, schedule rounds, issue the short-lived voice tokens, and record peer ratings.
  • Build the public surfaces above, plus your private board and stats.
  • Send the notices that keep a scheduled debate working: an iOS push or a web email when your challenge is accepted, when a debate is about to start, or when someone challenges you directly.
  • Bill and manage your Pro subscription, and keep the entitlement in sync across web and iOS.
  • Keep the Service safe: enforce the conduct rules, investigate reports, and prevent abuse.

5. Who else touches your data

We share data with a short list of processors, only as far as each one needs to do its job:

  • LiveKit carries the live voice. It handles the realtime audio stream during a debate; it does not store the recording for us.
  • Stripe processes web payments and holds your card under its own terms.
  • Apple provides Sign in with Apple, delivers push notifications, and processes App Store payments.
  • Our email provider sends the web notification emails over SMTP.

We do not sell your data. We may disclose it when the law requires, or to protect the rights and safety of our debaters and the Service.

6. Cookies and your session

The web app sets a session cookie so it can remember you are signed in and protect forms against cross-site request forgery. We use it to run the site, not to track you across the web for advertising. The iOS app authenticates with a token it stores on the device, not with cookies.

7. How long we keep it

We keep your account data while your account is open. Completed debates and the ratings on them stay on the public record because other people took part and rely on that history, even after one participant leaves. Payment metadata is kept as long as tax and accounting rules require. Push tokens drop off when they stop working.

8. Your rights

You can ask us to show you the data we hold, export it, correct it, or delete it. Edit your handle's public details in the app, or write to noreply@yuzi.nl for access, export, or deletion. Closing your account removes your private profile data; the public record of debates you completed with others may remain. Depending on where you live, you may also have the right to restrict or object to certain processing, and to complain to your data protection authority.

9. Security

We hash passwords, sign every voice and API token so it expires fast, hold the LiveKit and payment secrets only on our server, and never ship them in the apps. No system is perfectly secure, so we cannot promise absolute safety, but we work to protect what you trust us with.

10. Children

DebateNow is not for anyone under 13, or under the higher minimum age your local law sets. We do not knowingly collect data from children below that age. If you believe a child has given us data, write to noreply@yuzi.nl and we will remove it.

11. International transfers

We and our processors may handle your data in countries other than where you live, including the United States. Where we move data across borders, we rely on the safeguards the law requires for that transfer.

12. Changes to this policy

We revise this policy as the Service grows. We update the date above and, for material changes, give notice in the app or by email. Using DebateNow after a change means you accept the updated policy.

13. Contact

Privacy questions, requests, and complaints go to DebateNow at noreply@yuzi.nl.
