Frame the motion

The side that frames the motion often wins it. Before anyone trades arguments, someone decides what the debate is even about. Make that someone you.

Define the terms

Most motions hide a vague word. "Ban social media for under-16s" turns on what counts as social media and what a ban means in practice. Offer a fair, reasonable definition early. Stretch it too far and the other side calls the foul. Pitch it sensibly and the room debates on your map.

Pick your ground

You cannot defend everything, so choose where to plant your flag. A sprawling claim is easy to attack at the edges. A narrow, well-chosen case is easier to hold. Decide which version of the motion you are actually arguing, say so, and fight there.

Set the standard

Tell the judge how to weigh the round. "Judge this on which side better protects the people most at risk." Now every argument that serves that standard counts for you, and the other side has to either meet your test or argue for a different one. Whoever sets the measure controls the scoreboard.
